What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary health care – an art, science, philosophy and practice of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of illness. Naturopathic medicine is distinguished by the principles, which underlie and determine its practice. Methods used are consistent with these principles and are chosen upon the basis of client individuality. Naturopathic physicians are primary health care practitioners, whose diverse techniques include modern and traditional, scientific and empirical methods (AANP source). We utilize natural, non-toxic therapies and attempt to remove the cause of disease.

What modalities do naturopathic physicians use?

Naturopathic Physicians always focus on treating the underlying cause of disease. Common methods used by ND’s include herbal medicine, homeopathy, dietary counseling, nutritional supplementation, manipulative therapy, acupuncture, and counseling. ND’s are also trained in pharmacology and drug-herb/supplement interaction. These methods are generally safer, and are less toxic.

What are naturopathic licensed doctors?

A licensed naturopathic doctor (N.D.) attends a four-year, accredited graduate level naturopathic medical school. A naturopathic doctor additionally completes over 1,300 hours of clinical work and takes two professional board examinations to be licensed by a particular state. They need to fulfill state mandated continuing education requirements annually and follow the specific scope of practice defined by their state’s law (AANP website). All States are not licensed to have practicing naturopathic physicians.

What should I expect on my first patient visit?

Your first visit will be much longer than your traditional healthcare visit. It is approximately 90-120 minutes in length. Follow-up visits are 30 minutes in duration. The new patient intake will include a review of your chief complaints, past medical history, family medical history, previous surgeries/hospitalizations, current list of medications and supplements, diet, sleep, lifestyle, environmental exposures and physical exam. It is recommended that you bring any past laboratory tests and a list of previous conditions you are currently receiving care for with your PCP.

Based on your intake, we will recommend an individualized, comprehensive, whole-person treatment plan. We may also recommend lab work and specialty tests for further evaluative purposes.

Return office visits are typically scheduled 4-6 weeks after the first patient visit and are 30 minutes in length.

Do you accept insurance?

We do not participate with any insurance plans, however, if you have out-of-network benefits as part of your health plan, you may be able to get reimbursed for some of our services or it may be applied to your deductible. We do accept Flex Spending and Health Savings Accounts for payment. To find out if your insurance company will reimburse you for our services, contact them directly or speak with your plan administrator. Our office can provide you with a list of questions to ask your insurance company about out-of-network benefits and provide you with the necessary information needed to submit to your insurer.

Do you prescribe medications?

No. In the state of Connecticut, naturopathic physicians do not have the ability to prescribe pharmaceutical medications.

Do I have to stop taking my prescriptions?

No. It is not suggested to completely stop your prescriptions. We request that our patients additionally have their medical conditions managed by a primary care provider. We will work with your primary care provider and/or specialist, as requested, regarding suggested natural therapy supplementation. The natural therapies recommended should not replace the care being received by your primary care provider. However, in many instances, natural therapies can decrease the use of prescriptive medication. Reduction of prescription medication requires a collaborative approach with your primary care provider and/or specialists. FFH wants you to achieve your health goals safely and effectively.

Can I just use supplements at the health food store or in combination with your therapy?

It is best to receive advice regarding supplementation from a trained and licensed professional such as a naturopathic physician that graduated from an accredited naturopathic medical program. This will additionally ensure that you are taking products that are safe and at an appropriate amount. Supplements recommended at FFH are tested for quality and assurance by a third party. Products from a health food store or grocery store are not necessarily put through the same, stringent standards as the products suggested at our office. Your current supplementation regimen will be carefully reviewed, and appropriate revisions made.

Do I need to see you in person for an appointment?

Yes, out-of-state consultations are available, but the scope in which our physicians work is restricted due to regulations about telemedicine. It is required that you maintain a regular, working relationship with your primary care provider. We realize that traveling with physical limitations or special needs children may make it difficult to be seen in person. Our telemedicine consults adhere to the same standards and timeframe as the regular, in person office visits. Many patients choose telemedicine services, as an option, after a few in-person office visits and their care is managed properly.
